Highlights

Unemployed people ages 16 to 24 learn housing construction job skills and complete their high school education while rehabilitating or constructing housing for very-low, low-income and homeless people in their communities.

More than $485 million in grants have been awarded. Since the program began in 1993, over 47,000 young people have participated in the program constructing or rehabilitating over 13,000 units of affordable housing.

On September 22, 2006, President George W. Bush signed the Youthbuild Transfer Act into law (Public Law 109-281). The Bill transfers the Youthbuild Program to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). YouthBuild grants awarded by HUD prior to Fiscal Year 2007 will continue to be monitored by HUD until the authority to expend those funds expires. For general information on the YouthBuild Program please refer to the YouthBuild page on the Department of Labor’s Web site: http://www.doleta.gov/youth_services/YouthBuild.cfm.
