Real Estate Acquisition and Relocation
The Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act of 1970 (URA) assists and protects people affected by the acquisition, rehabilitation, or demolition of real property for Federal or federally funded projects. Congress enacted the URA to ensure that people whose real property is acquired, or who have to move as a result of federally funded projects, receive fair compensation and assistance in moving from the property they occupy. HUD works in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (designated Federal lead agency for the URA). HUD issues published guidance and sponsors training for grantees and the public on HUD's URA requirements and other HUD relocation requirements, such as Section 104(d) of the Housing and Community Development Act.
URA requirements apply to HUD-funded grants, loans, or contributions, including HOME, CDBG, or Section 108 loan guarantees. However, the American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI) is not subject to the URA requirements.
